Nerds are neither athletes generally speaking, though I am not so sure. Nerds are neither so charismatic either except likely among other nerds, or that something of a fictitious social class were derived that hadn't in modern parlance taken the form a specific spectral class of autism, but usually it seems another way of, I generally interface strangely with the rest of society, perhaps, or are arguably could be more of book worm, could be more of something more socially exotic in relation to the rest of society. The athlete is the athlete, but isn't so much the spectator, as the nerd may neither be so much the spectator, or could be likely the spectator of curling before American rules football. Lately it seems my sense of the nerd is one being a connoisseur of craft beer, for instance, as to despising Bud light and all of the major large scale distribution of 'beers' although likely the nerd moniker has been replaced here at times and replaced with hipster, or hipster seems to delineate a social ascension of the nerd to another social level.
It is rather offensive in a way, though, however, to the notion that a nerd might be succeeding anymore than a nerd may be more likely to pursue certain forms of occupation over others where likely in others as one might imagine being so conformed as to obtain vertical occupational mobility.
The characterization of 'nerd' makes for ease in social relations...in this case, if it were as much the 'nerd' might be as likely a Star Trek fan, or a fan of Star Wars, or a fan of something much popular to a given social classification thus facilitating inter social functioning. There may be subsets of 'nerd' populations one of which are either not so inclined to certain types games over others. For instance, one subset may prefer text based role playing games over games that attract wider audiences.

Ambition for what lay in store...
You see it daily in a given code of society, all ambition circulating, its positive goals. Its ease in functioning, its self reward. Its providing endowment for the quietly observant. Those that appease it, and even given to its functionaries who aggrandize its rewards. For all this measure, defining success, successful life, career, and anything else making for the life that one desired to have. Maybe you are on the outside of it all, observant of it, cognizant of how failing teeth could cost you an interview with the lesser of cosmetics in hand, or so much aware to the caution of how you speak daily in selection of carefully measured words. Others speak of anger at political correctness, yet you live in the bastion of conservative political correctness where it is expected that you are silently observant of them that are less observant. You would be supportive silently of their work. Luminous functioning is given even, part time work is more common place, is it? Pay mobility is more lateral than vertical these days and given to all the daily refrains of functioning in another world. Supposedly life is sober for this other professional world, supposedly sober even if one were vicariously aggrandizing all the wealth that were far less than sober. Dreams are there, likely beyond one's reach as it has been timelessly coded.

Cure all s with a cattle prod...you know its one big fucked place to live with no remaining brains likely to speak of... :D
It will be great day when that old reign comes to an end...
you know, the U.S. is an infant relative to civilizations pasts...all bad things come to an end in time don't they? :D
